Bounty Hunter Blog Tour

My Review:
★★★★★

I found this to be a wonderfully entertaining and fun book to read. This story contains magic, demons, aliens, and space travelling bounty hunters! What more could anyone ask for?

The main character is a 14 year old boy that is constantly on the move because he was born with magical abilities. Demons are out to kill him, people are afraid to have him near them, and only a unique crew of bounty hunters seem to be able to accept him as he is.

I really enjoyed the writing style of this author. She obviously has a fun sense of humor that she manages to weave into the story. The main character, Kai, is endlessly coming up with snarky comments, no matter what situation he is in. Being strangled by a big werewolf-looking cretin or chased around a bar by a demon wanting to kill him? He's got a quip for that. No matter how serious the situation seems to be, the author makes sure to throw in something that will make you smile.

I highly recommend this book to any reader that enjoys books with magic, demons, aliens, and adventure. There is nothing in this book that I would not let my ten year old daughter read. Keep reading to learn about the book, the author, and to enjoy an excerpt that I thought would show you how fun this book is to read. Then enter the giveaway!

BOOK DESCRIPTION:

What do you do when your magic makes you a target? Run. Fight. Die.

14-year-old Kai Koson had nothing to do with the apocalypse, thank you very much. He was just a baby the day a coven of blood witches ripped a hole in the universe and the demons fell screaming from the sky. Earth and its magic perished. Witchkind was hunted and annihilated.

Now, because he was born a witch, Kai must spend his life running and fighting for survival. Even his own uncle seems determined to abandon him.

With nothing left to lose, Kai runs away and joins a team of galactic bounty hunters. But instead of providing an escape, it sets Kai on a path that will destroy everything he believes about himself and the apocalypse, transforming him into the most wanted teenager in the galaxy.

Written with humour, imagination and darkness, Bounty Hunter and its protagonist Kai Koson stand confidently beside Percy Jackson, Artemis Fowl, Alex Rider, Young Bond, Mortal Engines and Harry Potter.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

S.J. Hollis is a writer. Torturer of fictional teenagers. Author of Bounty Hunter, a YA apocalyptic fantasy with ... erm, funny bits.

Short, unreliable, slightly odd thirty-seven-year-old. Pizza fiend. Suspicious of the human race. Watches the crime channel instead of the morning news. Fan of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Batman. Morning person. Lover of Game of Thrones and Hollyoaks. Skyrim player. Shakespeare admirer. Forty quid a month comics habit. Thinks frost giants are cuddly and Loki needs a hug. Feels sick at the thought of sharing the remote control. Is learning to cook (can fry bacon like the devil fries souls, but spaghetti more of a challenge). Currently obsessed with fish finger sandwiches. Very short attention sp...

S J Hollis lives in Surrey, England with her two houseplants and a cuddly seagull. Bounty Hunter is her debut novel and she is currently working on the next book in the series.

Excerpt:

Kai ran back the way he’d come and found a door that looked like it led into the main part of the warehouse. It was locked but old and barely hanging on by its hinges. Kai took it at a run and slammed into it with his shoulder. He was surprised to find that the door gave easily under his weight, and both he and the door swung out into the main warehouse. He tripped a few feet, and the scanner fell to the ground with a crack and a worrying tinkle of broken glass. But much more worrying were the yellow eyes staring at him from five feet away. They belonged to a seven-foot wolf man wearing an orange jumpsuit with a large fish hanging out of one pocket.‘Grrr,’ said Heff Rhina.

People often say that when death arrives, when it shrieks and threatens to swallow your soul, your life flashes and explodes in a chaotic tangle of memories. Years of recollections manifest in a pandemonium of images, faces, smells, tears and laughter, pain, grandmothers and family pets. It isn’t true.

Perhaps it was because he was so young, fourteen years old and sadly lacking in enough significant memories. Or maybe it was because he was staring down a seven-foot, hairy Quix with three-inch canines and claws that could scalp a demon. To be honest, he was finding it hard to think of anything other than which of his limbs would be ripped off first.

The Quix growled a deep, rumbling warning and raised the hackles on the back of his neck. It was as cold in the warehouse as it was outside in the deep snow, and Kai’s panting breaths
puffed out half a dozen white clouds while he decided if the pros of running outweighed the cons of the small stun gun he was slowly sliding out of its holster.

The Quix’s breath billowed like smoke, and Kai could feel its putrid heat from five feet away. Could he actually outrun this thing? ‘End of the line. Or, rather, end of the warehouse,’ he said. ‘Nowhere else to go. You might as well give up now before I stun you.’ The Quix’s muzzle wrinkled, and his ears flattened against the sides of his head.

‘What would you prefer,’ Kai continued, edging a little closer and a little to the left, ‘cuffs and an escort, or a hundred thousand volts and a really bad headache tomorrow? See, I’m giving you a choice. How good is that? You wouldn’t get that kind of service anywhere but Sam’s Bounties. Please think of us for your next escape.’

Heff Rhina lowered his clawed hands to the floor and tensed, bracing his muscular legs and curling spittle-covered lips into a sticky snarl. ‘You’re dead, kid,’ he breathed, and then he leapt. The strike was not wholly unexpected, so Kai was ready. He lifted his stunner and squeezed the trigger. A magilectrical charge zapped from the end of the weapon like a miniature lightning bolt, striking Heff Rhina in the chest. The Quix howled and stumbled backwards as though he had just smacked into a wall of pain. The smell of singed hair filled Kai’s nostrils. Urgh. He would smell that for days.

He pulled the trigger again, and the warehouse rattled with another cacophonous scream. Heff Rhina fell to his knees, his chest heaving and saliva dripping from his mouth in long white strings. Narrowed yellow eyes bored into wide hazel ones. ‘You pest,’ he spat, and he sprang forward too quickly for Kai to sidestep the swipe of claws that knocked away his gun, shredded his coat, punctured his vest and tore into his skin.

Kai fell to the floor, his body buckling awkwardly and pain blossoming across his chest. His shoulder caught on a crate as he twisted onto his front. He swore and fumbled at his belt for anything he could use, a flash-bang, a smoke ball, but his fingers couldn’t get a grip on anything. The Quix’s shadow crept over him. Kai rolled onto his back, his fingers still skittering over his body looking for weapons. Hot drool slopped over his face. ‘You’re angry. I appreciate that. That had to sting, huh? AHH!’Heff Rhina’s hand wrapped around Kai’s throat and lifted him from the freezing cold floor, which was sort of a relief, in a terrifying and suffocating sort of way.‘I will kill you!’

‘You say that,’ Kai managed to wheeze. Talking was a tricky business when a large hairy hand was wrapped around his neck and his windpipe was being slowly constricted. ‘But you don’t really want to kill me, do you? You’ve got a lot of love to give. I can tell.’

The Quix pulled him close, sniffed him with a large, black nose and sneezed. A great burst of saliva and stinking breath engulfed them both. ‘Yep, a lot of love,’ Kai said weakly. ‘And as a token of my own affection, a gift.’Kai kicked just where no one wants to be kicked, and Heff Rhina dropped him like a stone. Kai got to his feet and wobbled towards his gun. He tried to ignore the fact that his vision was tunnelling and his chest was wet, warm and throbbing.‘I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOU HUMANS!!’ Heff Rhina bellowed, and with an explosion of energy and fury he charged again.

Kai saw teeth and fur and claws and, oh, Galway, Venta Belgarum, demons, hills and towers, witches standing all around him, everything he was afraid of and his first stolen ride on a jetbike...! Oh. Maybe it was true after all
